Mathematics plays a vital part in your child's education. It is a creative and highly interconnected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solutions to some of history's most intriguing problems. A high-quality Mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

The Curriculum

As of September 2014, the National Curriculum aims to make sure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that pupils have a conceptual understanding and are able to apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately;
  • reason mathematically by follow a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument with justification or proof; and
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems.

Problem solving and the application of mathematical skills and knowledge is crucial. Children need to be able to apply their learning in different contexts in order to be successful- this mastery of mathematical concepts is very important in the children's learning. This is why problem solving is interwoven throughout our Mathematics curriculum and teaching. From mathematical riddles to finding all the possibilities, we develop the children's reasoning, logic and oracy skills, which are important for their later life.

We believe that your child's education in Mathematics should be exciting, inspiring, challenging and relevant to them. Our curriculum encourages the use of the outdoors in Mathematics lessons. There are many opportunities outside to teach and reinforce mathematical knowledge, developing all four strands. This includes: the use of leaves, sticks and stones to teach number bonds, pine cones when collecting and presenting data and hunting for 2D and 3D shapes in nature.

Furthermore, we actively encourage the use of technology in your child's Mathematics education. Technology surrounds us, as does Mathematics, so it is important they are combined. We use many, safe educational apps on the iPads. These apps, which can be downloaded at home too, include Maths Bingo, Bee Bot, Code Squad, Subtraction Galaxy and Shape Quest. Some educational websites, particularly focusing on number facts (such as times tables and number bonds), are listed below. Have a go and have fun!

19.10.16 Boston Grammar School Maths Quiz

Some of our magnificent mathematicians in Year 6 represented our school and federation at the annual Boston Grammar School Maths Quiz today. Well done to all of the children- they demonstrated excellent mathematical knowledge, teamwork, competitiveness and resilience throughout the challenging competition. Well done to the children from Wyberton Primary School for winning first place for our federation!
